Two weeks in, and I’m having the best time of my life. Between organising and bossing people around as I get the festival ready, I’ve been slowly going through my bucket list with Heph. And if we aren’t doing some of the more unusual requests—like medical play—there are more intimate moments that have us lingering in bed until one of us remembers we have responsibilities.

Each day, I start to question whether I want some kind of scandal with him or if I want to give in to this quieter life that would only need a few adjustments to be perfect. A quality cafe with a more experienced barista is the only significant item on the things I miss from what I’m progressively considering my old life.

I’m sure Heph feels the same. He hasn’t asked any more questions about the scandal, and when he asks about the festival, it doesn’t feel like he’s quizzing me about my progress.

Today is no different than any other.

My office at the Olympic Arts Collective offices was designed for people my size. The office has a small window overlooking the woods. Unfortunately, it is taken up by a cranky window air conditioning unit that pushes out warm air. Still, the office is cooler than the outside temperature, which is a few degrees below record-breaking.

While I review past budgets and minutes from executive meetings, I periodically pluck at the cotton t-shirt I bought at the dollar general. I have outfits at home. Home. No. Heph’s, I mean. I have summer clothes at Heph’s, but in the last week, I’ve bought a few more pieces that are far more practical than pressed linen. The most notable change is I’ve given up on my standard haircare routine and encouraged my natural curls. I keep doing a double take when I pass any reflective surface, astounded by the difference. I grin when I see a curl bounce from the corner of my eye.

Has a weight been lifted off my shoulders? No.

Do I feel like a new person? No.

Is it fun to try something new after decades of straightening my hair? Yes.

A sharp rap at the door has my eyes bouncing from spreadsheets to Galatea, a prodigy sculptor whose workshop is attached to the main building.

“I’m going to head into town for lunch. Interested?”

“Oh? Are you sure? I don’t want to intrude.” I’m stunned because this is the first time any of them have sought out my company outside of work commitments or a few nights when I’ve joined them for after-work drinks with Heph.

“I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t want you to join.”

“Thank you, I would love to.”

She rolls her eyes, which I take in good spirit.

Lunch, it turns out, is an artisanal deli that sells something I have never heard of but am an immediate convert to. “A red eye?” I’d had to ask what that was, and I am now on my second.

“Oh, I should probably get Heph something.” I scan the board, trying to figure out what he might like.
